How to Go to Sleep - Drift Off and Beat Insomnia

There are no magic tricks when it comes to rest. Finding out how to go to sleep, is mostly common sense, with a few advanced techniques that may make all the difference.



Most importantly get into a routine. Go to bed at the same time every night so your body knows that it's time for rest. Work out how much time you'd like to sleep every night, work out what time your alarm goes off, work backwards, and that's your bedtime. Don't nap during the day if you're having trouble sleeping at night as you want to be tired at bed time.



Prepare your body for rest. Avoid alcohol, smoking, heavy, very sweet or spicy foods. These all alter the delicate chemical composition of our bodies natural start. An excess of any one of these may be responsible for your sleeping issues.



Get plenty of exercise, to use up all your excess energy, but don't do it during night time. Your higher metabolism post activity may keep you up "buzzing" preventing your shut eye.



Your environment is just as important as your physical state. Find a comfortable mattress that won't distract you while asleep. You want a slightly colder environment, as our core temperature needs to drop during night time to facilitate the dreaming process. Investing in blackout curtains can be the best investment you'll ever make. Any light can be a distraction, and that is the last thing you want.



Reserve the bedroom for sleep and sex only. Never bring your work into the rest area. This is reserved for relaxation so jealously guard it. Remove the television from the room. It's so easy to stay awake much later than you ever intended by staying tuned into the box.



Music or talk radio is also generally not a good idea as the human voice is a natural target for your brain to latch onto. You want to avoid any sort of sound that can interrupt your natural relaxation state.
